How to Dynamic Carve on Snowboard

1
Sharpen your snowboard. Snowboards have metal edges for a reason. They cut into the snow to allow for smooth turns. Dull edges can severely degrade your turns' quality, so take your board to a shop and have it professionally sharpened.
-
2
Find an ideal area. If this is your first time with dynamic carving, choose an easy hill with fresh powder and as little traffic as possible.
-
3
Warm up. Before you begin, take a few minutes to loosen your body. Dynamic carving requires you to be relaxed and flexible. Strap into your snowboard, bend your knees slightly and bounce up and down a few times.
-
4
Begin your descent. Aim your board straight down the hill. Keep your knees bent and relaxed. Your knees should be at nearly a 90-degree angle, almost as if you are sitting on a chair.
-
5
Keep your back straight. Do not slouch or bend backward. This ensures that your center of gravity is properly placed.
-
6
Gently but quickly swing your back leg to the left or right. It does not matter which direction you start with. If you are turning on your toe edge, simultaneously press your toes down. This will cause the edge to sink into the snow, completing the first turn. If you are turning on your heel edge, lightly dig your heels down to obtain the same effect.
-
7
Maintain your posture. As a beginner to this technique, you may feel tempted to lean into the turn, like a basic carve. However, in dynamic carving, the snowboard should move under you while your body stays in the same position.
-
8
Switch directions. Repeat Step 6 in the opposite direction. If you are turning on your toes, switch to your heels. If you are on your heels, switch to your toes.
-
9
Maintain a steady rhythm. Alternate directions at a steady rate. The speed and frequency depends on your level of comfort or the necessity to avoid obstacles. If you feel you are losing control, come to a quick stop and try again when you are ready. You will gradually be able to maintain this rhythm longer as you practice.
