How to Maneuver a Snowboard

Snowboarding is a sport that can provide an adrenaline rush for riders. With a diverse set of tricks and combinations, there is a seemingly infinite amount of maneuvers possible. Before learning more advanced tricks and getting air, it's necessary for snowboarders to learn the basics of maneuvering a snowboard. Learn to effectively balance, turn and steer your snowboard while remaining safe.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand at the top of the slope with your feet in your snowboard's bindings. You should be facing directly ahead with your snowboard positioned horizontally to the slope.

    • 2

Turn your snowboard so that it's facing the direction of the slope when you are ready to descend. This is done by bending your knees slightly and shifting your weight toward the direction you want to ride.

    • 3

Maintain your balance as much as possible, and keep your knees slightly bent once you are in motion. Keep your head facing the direction you are riding and your eyes focused on the path you want to take.

    • 4

Perform a heel-side turn when you want to turn outward. This is done by straightening your legs and shifting your weight backwards. Doing so will create a carving motion that will guide you backwards.

    • 5

Perform a toe-side turn when you want to turn inward. This is similar to the heel-side turn, but you will shift your weight inward toward your toes this time. Bend your knees slightly, and make a gradual turn toward the front of your body.

    • 6

Stop your run when you reach the bottom of the slope by performing a quick heel-side turn. This will force your snowboard to become horizontal with the slope, which will stop your momentum.
