How to Glide on a Snowboard

Snowboarding is a sport that requires both balance and finesse. To advance in the sport and learn different tricks and maneuvers, it's important for an athlete to first learn the basics. Performing a glide is one of the building blocks and should be learned before moving on to more difficult maneuvers. Following certain procedures helps most snowboarders learn to glide and maintain control of their snowboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a location in an uncrowded area with a gentle hill to learn how to glide. Don't try to learn this maneuver on a big slope with lots of other snowboarders; gliding is easier to learn without a bunch of eyes on you.

    • 2

Place your front foot in its binding and leave your back foot out of its binding. Rest your back foot just in front of the back binding. Doing this will allow you to easily stop while learning to glide and avoid falling.

    • 3

Bend forward or wiggle slightly until you begin slowly moving down the hill. Once you are in motion, keep your eyes straight in front of you.

    • 4

Bend your knees slightly and avoid moving your arms. Keep your knees parallel to the ground, which will keep you level with the slope and help you achieve balance.

    • 5

Maintain your balance by keeping your weight centered as much as possible. It's sometimes a natural instinct to lean backward on a hill, but avoid doing this, because it can throw you off-balance.

    • 6

Keep your snowboard straight as straight as possible. Avoid making any sudden movement and follow the natural terrain of the slope.

    • 7

Ride your snowboard to the end of the slope until you come to a stop.
