How to Jump High on a Snowboard

Jumping on a snowboard makes you feel like you are flying. Holding on to this feeling for longer means learning to jump even higher. Higher jumps also allow time for front or back side grabs, spins and flips. Learning to jump higher involves mastering the basics of jumping and then moving up to bigger and bigger jumps. The keys to jumping higher are the speed at which you approach the jump and the timing of the pop.

Instructions

    • 1

Practice popping on flat terrain. With equal weight on both feet, crouch in a low squat and quickly spring up off of both feet, bringing your knees to your chest. The higher you can get your knees, the higher the pop.

    • 2

Practice popping on a green run while riding. Progress to popping over small things like piles of snow or bumps on the run. Try and bring your knees closer to your chest to get a higher pop.

    • 3

Find a small jump, then inspect the approach and the landing to make sure it's not icy. Test the speed you will need to hit the jump by riding past it from your starting point.

    • 4

Approach the jump at the right speed with your shoulders parallel to your board, crouch low and pop when your front foot reaches the lip of the jump. Practice bringing your knees up to your chest in mid-air to get a higher jump.

Find bigger and bigger jumps to practice on, focusing on bringing your knees to your chest in mid-air.
