How to Customize a Captain's Armband

The captain's armband serves as unique uniform accessory that tells the teams and match officials involved in a particular game that the person wearing it is the team captain. Captain's armbands are typically used in soccer, but exist in rugby and Australian Rules Football as well. Though the bands are usually yellow, they can come in a variety of other colors, such as black or blue, and can be plain or customized to include stripes or the letter "C" for "Captain." Stitching and fabric paints are the two main ways of customizing the bands.

  • Sewing needle

  1. Stitching

      Pin the material or patch to the armband with straight pins.

      Thread the sewing needle and tie a knot on the end of the thread, so that the needle does not become unthreaded while you sew.

      Push the needle through the back of the armband and material or patch.

      Sew around the edges of the material or patch you're applying to the captain's armband.

      Cut the remaining strand of string when you are finished sewing. Leave enough space to be able to tie a knot to secure the remaining string.

    Fabric Paint

      Ensure that the captain's arm band is completely dry. If you have worn it before, you may wish to watch it with soap then let it dry before proceeding.

      Grip the fabric paint pen as you would a regular pen or pencil. Squeeze the pen as you carefully move your hand in the motion of the design you wish to apply to the captain's armband.

      Use other fabric paint pen colors until you have completed your design. Let the paint dry completely before using the captain's armband.
