Goaltending Tips
-
Positioning
-
When tending goal, it's important to maintain a good position in order to block the soccer ball. When the opposing team is attacking the goal, goaltenders must analyze the situation and be careful not to get out of position when the ball is being passed from one point to another. In order to maintain proper positioning, goaltenders need to read the body language of the opponent and not rush out to the ball.
Focus
-
Because goaltenders are not involved directly in the game at all times, it's important to remain focused on the game and not lose track of the ball or opponent. Some goaltenders only begin to focus on the ball when it is within the 18-yard box, which can be a bad habit. When the opposition is attacking, goaltenders need to look at the ball and focus on its trajectory as it is kicked at their direction.
Knock it Out
-
When the soccer ball has been kicked in a goaltender's direction, the primary objective is to ensure it does not go into the net. While it's ideal to gain possession of the ball and pass it on to a teammate, if a goaltender is unsure, just knock the ball off its path. Even if knocking the ball over the crossbar or off to the side results in a corner kick, it's better then allowing a goal.
Confidence
-
In order to maintain success in the game of soccer, goaltenders must make strong decisions and remain aggressive. Goaltenders must have the confidence to attack forwards and come off the line to gain control of the soccer ball. Because of their view of the field, goaltenders also must have the confidence to put players in the proper position to stop the ball and defend the opposition.
