How to Choose a NOCSAE Approved Softball Mask

Currently softball helmets leave batters' faces exposed. Taking a hit there could mean years of corrective surgery. That's why many leagues are now requiring players to wear masks too and those masks must be approved by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE).

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the level of protection you want. The NOCSAE has approved softball masks with only two bars to allow better viewing during batting. But there are also many softball masks that provide more bars across your face for better protection.

    • 2

Decide what material you want the mask made from. Masks are predominantly made from wire but there are a few plastic ones on the market. All of these meet NOCSAE standards so choose the one that works best for you.

    • 3

Look for the label. Every mask approved by the NOCSAE must be labeled "Meets NOCSAE Standards." Without this label, you won't be able to wear your mask in the game.

Buy a mask that works with your batting helmet. Masks don't fit every helmet out there-they are designed to work with specific batting helmets. Know what brand your batting helmet is and how the mask must be attached before making any purchases.
