Hammer Lowering Safety for a Colt 45

Setting the hammer down on a live round with a Colt .45 isn't particularly difficult, but it definitely requires attention to detail and the briefest lapse in concentration can be catastrophic.
  1. The Easy Way

    • Thumb on hammer

The common way shooters familiar with this firearm lets the hammer down is to apply rearward pressure on the spur of the hammer and squeeze the trigger. Then, gently and slowly ride the hammer down.

    Beginners

    • Use the piece of skin on your hand in the "U" between finger and thumb.

A safe way to let the hammer down is to place the fleshy part of your hand, between your thumb and forefinger on your non-shooting hand, between the hammer and the frame, then let the hammer down the same way. This way, if the hammer falls too hard, it hits your hand instead of the firing pin. It might pinch, but at least it doesn't go off.

    Safety

    • You should never pull the hammer back until you are ready to shoot. If you have to let the hammer down without firing, make sure the gun is pointed in a safe direction.
