Making an Inexpensive Target Holder
-
1
Obtain a metal-framed real estate sign. You can often get these for free or for a minimal charge from real estate companies. The metal frame is durable, and it easily pushes into the ground.
-
2
Get some paper for your target. A newspaper printing company is a great resource. After a print run, the printer may be left with a partial roll of paper that’s too small for printing the next job. These rolls can still hold several yards of paper, however--more than enough for numerous trips to the range. As the printer normally throws away this leftover paper, you can often get the paper for free or for a nominal fee.
-
3
Cut a scrap piece of plywood with the saw so that it fits snugly inside the real estate sign framework. This will give your target some backing so the paper doesn’t rip when you shoot it.
-
4
Drill a small hole near each corner of the plywood. Insert a piece of small-gauge wire through each of the holes and secure the plywood to the sign frame.
-
5
Cut several sheets of paper to fit over the plywood. Draw a bulls-eye and rings with a marker on the paper. Do this over the plywood because the marker will probably bleed through the paper. Make enough for a day’s shooting ahead of time so you can maximize your shooting time.
-
6
Staple or tape the paper target to the plywood, stand the target holder in the ground and you’re ready to shoot.
