Whether purchasing a handgun, a rifle, or any type of firearm online, you will need the services of a Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) gun dealer. The FFL gun dealer will help you to legally register and transfer the title of the gun from the seller to yourself.

      Contact your local gun shop. Many gun shops and dealers will be happy to help you transfer the title of any firearm you purchase by receiving the gun and completing the paperwork.

      The average charge for this courtesy is $17 with the full range running from $10 to $50 per firearm. However, since they are also in the business of selling guns, the local shops may feel like you are buying from the competition and will not be willing to assist you, especially if they carry the same model you are looking to purchase.

      Check the auction house for other potential FFL dealers in your area. Most of the online auctions that sell firearms have a database which lists FFL dealers who are willing to assist in the transaction.

      You can use the database to locate individuals in your area. The auction houses also list the general price range that the individual FFL dealers charge. Be sure to contact the proposed FFL dealer before bidding on anything to find out what is needed to complete the transaction and if he will accept the shipment and complete the paperwork.

      Find an FFL dealer through personal recommendations. Occasionally, you will be able to talk to friends and family members who have used an FFL dealer in the past. Sometimes, the dealer does not have a storefront and only uses his license for personal transactions. Though harder to find, these FFL dealers will be happy to complete the transaction on a case-by-case basis.
