How to Do a Double-Tap

A double-tap, sometimes called a controlled pair, is a sequence of two well-placed and well-aimed shots that occur with very little time between them. While the concept of a double-tap sounds simple, when it comes to shooting, controlling the gun and racing the clock all at the same time, many shooters run into trouble.

Instructions

Ready your weapon by taking it out of the holster, turning off the safety and lining up your sights. Make sure you're in a neutral stance with your shoulders squared towards your target and that you're gripping the gun with a neutral grip.

Press the trigger for the first shot. As the gun recoils, start to track the front sight so that you can quickly return to a well-aimed position for your second shot. At the same time, release and then prep the trigger so that you're ready to press the reset trigger after the gun completes the recoil.

Allow the gun to return to its starting position, which it will do if you do not force it back to position. Take aim through your sights again and then press the trigger to shoot the gun a second time.

Practice your double-taps at first by considering them to be just two sequential shots with minimal time between them. After you've successfully learned to do a double-tap, start to work on your timing so that the second shot follows the first almost immediately.
