Glock Cleaning Instructions

Like every other firearm, a Glock must be disassembled and cleaned regularly. Grime and powder residue can accumulate in the moving parts of the weapon, and to maintain optimal function and operational safety, careful cleaning is crucial. Taking apart and cleaning a Glock is a relatively simple process, and should take only about 20 minutes.
  1. Disassembly

    • Remove the magazine and work the action to make sure the gun is completely empty. Check the chamber to make sure every round has been ejected, and then pull the trigger. To remove the slide, draw it back 1/8 inch, and pull down the slide release switches (located above the trigger guard on both sides of the gun). With these pulled down, move the slide forward off the gun. Finally, remove the spring mechanism and the barrel from the slide.

    Cleaning

    • Use a brush and felt patches to clean the inside of the barrel, lubricating with powder solvent until all residue is removed from the barrel. Wipe the moving metal parts of the gun with small amounts of gun oil, including the trigger mechanism, the firing pin, and the slide grooves. Use compressed air to blow out any other debris or residue in the housing of the grip, barrel support or slide pieces.

    Reassembly

    • Replace the barrel into the slide and then pop the spring back into place in the slide housing. Then align the slide grooves carefully with the corresponding riveting on the pistol and move the slide back along the gun until it clicks into place.
