The Instructions for Mouthguards

Mouth guards are frequently worn to protect teeth from fracturing and to absorb shocks while playing hockey, football and other high-impact sports. They also can prevent broken teeth from cutting cheeks and lips. Besides their uses in sports, mouth guards can prevent erosion from bruxism, a nocturnal tooth grinding condition. Regular mouth guard maintenance and proper fitting are necessary for healthy teeth and a fresh, long-lasting mouth guard.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit a dentist to have a mouth guard custom made for your teeth. The dentist will take an impression of your dental arch and use it to cast a mouth guard that fits your teeth perfectly.

    • 2

Clean your mouth guard in cold water or mouthwash before and after each use, and brush it with a toothbrush and toothpaste.

    • 3

Place the mouth guard in your mouth, concave side up, and bite into it with your top set of teeth. Move it around with your fingers and tongue until if fits your teeth comfortably.

    • 4

Clean the guard in soap and cold water when it gets dirty, or about once a week, and rinse it with cool water.

    • 5

Store the guard in the container it came in or another firm, ventilated container when it's not in use, and keep it out of direct sunlight or heat. Extreme heat can cause distortion.

    • 6

Replace the mouth guard when it develops holes or doesn't fit your teeth comfortably.

    • 7

Bring the guard with you when visiting the dentist.
