Types of Chin Straps

Even the most minute of sports accessories can come in different varieties. A chin strap, which is the part of a helmet that holds it onto the person's head while supporting his jaw, comes in several distinct types itself. Though they are not all used for sports only, they all still have their practical application uses.
  1. Full Chin Strap

    • The full chin strap is the chin strap that holds a cupped strap below the chin to support the entire chin and hold it in place. It usually wraps around the chin going a little up the chin and a little towards the neck. It is usually used in football helmets to keep them very sturdy when being jostled and hit at high speeds and velocities.

    Thin Strap

    • The thin strap comes down each side of the head and is connected with only a thin line of material and buckled below the neck. This type of strap is usually only used for biking or skateboarding helmets. Because bikers or skateboarders are less likely to be hit at high force like football players, they are less secure, but still useful in what they accomplish.

    Sleep Strap

    • Though not used for sports, a sleep strap is another kind of chin strap. It looks similar to a thin strap, but holds the chin in place better. Sleep straps are worn by chronic snorers or sufferers of sleep apnea. Sleep straps hold the chin in place so it takes more force to snore. This usually helps the snorer not snore by breathing primarily through the nose rather than the mouth.
