How to Open a U-Lock
In 2004, the U-lock manufacturer “Kryptonite” issued a mass recall of its bicycle locks due to a breach in the lock’s security, enabling people to pick the locks with the barrel of a disposable pen. Since this time, many U-lock manufacturers have changed the design of their locks, now using flat key locks, combination locks, or a combination of both of these locking mechanisms. How you open a U-lock bicycle lock depends upon the style of lock you have.

1
Insert the flat key into the keyhole on the straight underside portion of the U-lock. Turn the key to release the lock and open it by pulling the straight portion away from the U-shaped portion of the lock.
-
2
Dial the digits of the combination into the U-lock to open the lock. After you dial the correct digits, push in slightly on the straight section of the lock and pull out to release the lock.
-
3
Use both the flat key and the combination to open some U-locks that require both locking mechanisms to open the U-lock.
-
4
Change the combination periodically to ensure your U-lock stays secure. Write down your combination in a safe place to ensure you do not forget it.
