Method to Sterilize Swim Goggles

Swim goggles can harbor fungi and bacteria on lenses and around the frames; thus, you should sterilize them periodically. Swimming goggles can also fog up from water deposits found in pools. Luckily, you can clean and sterilize your swimming goggles very easily with inexpensive products.
  1. Items Needed

    • Gather a few Q-tips, a bath towel and a small or medium sized bowl. Buy a small bottle of baby shampoo, a box of borax, small bottle of vinegar and a few eye glass lens cloths. You'll find the borax in the laundry detergent aisles in grocery stores.

    Cleaning Swimming Goggles

    • Rinse your swim goggles under warm tap water. Then take a Q-tip and dip it into the baby shampoo. Swirl the Q-tip around the frame of your swimming goggles, inside and out to remove dirt and debris. Rinse the swim goggles thoroughly and place them on a towel to air dry. Take one of your lens cloths and soak a corner of it in a tablespoon of the white vinegar. Gently wipe the inside and outside of the lenses on your swimming goggles. "Vinegar is a natural and mild cleaner that can be used to remove water deposits on objects," according to Penn State University.

    Sterilization of Swim Goggles

    • Take the bowl and fill it up with warm water. Add 3 tablespoons of borax to the water. Mix the borax with the spoon until the water becomes cloudy. Place your swim goggles in the borax solution, and leave your goggles to soak for up to 15 minutes. According to the University of Virginia, "Borax becomes an antiseptic solution when mixed with water and has been commonly used as a disinfectant detergent for centuries." Remove the swim goggles from the solution, rinse them under warm tap water and dry with the soft lens cloth. Take a lens cloth and dip it into vinegar and clean the inside and outside of the swimming goggles once more to ensure any borax solution or water deposits are removed. Re-dry with a clean lens cloth.
