How to Remove Old Spikes Out of Athletic Shoes

Many outdoor athletic shoes come with the option of screw-in spikes. These spikes are intended for adding extract grip and friction between your feet and the outdoor arena. Many coaches and trainers will encourage their athletes to use spikes, or cleats, so they can reach optimal performance. To prevent breaking and ruining spikes, the spikes should be removed after each season.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the spike wrench around the first spike.

    • 2

Turn the wrench counterclockwise (to the left) to begin to unscrew the first spike.

    • 3

Pull the spike out with your fingers.

Repeat this process to remove all spikes from both shoes.

    • 4

Use needle nose pliers if you do not have a spike wrench. Spike wrenches can be purchased from sporting goods stores, and many coaches will also have these wrenches. However, you can grasp the spike with the pliers and turn counterclockwise to release the spike as well.

Apply a small amount of a lubricant (like WD-40) to any spikes that may be stuck. This will help loosen the spikes to be removed.
