How to Set Up Your Transition Area in a Triathlon

A good triathlon is dependent on smooth transitions--the spaces between your swim and bike, and your bike and run. The race clock is still running while you're in transition, so you want to be sure that you get through them as quickly as possible. How you set up your transition area is one of the keys to successful transitions. Let's take a look at one way to set up your transition area.

  • Bicycle
  • Bike helmet
  • Cycling accessories
  • Running shoes
  • Running accessories (race number belt and hat)
  • Large towel
  • Small towel (handtowel)

      Once you have found your bike racking spot, rack your bike. If you have the option, end spots give you a little more room. In the space next to your bike, lay down your large towel.

      On the towel, lay out your cycling shoes (and socks if you need them), and next to them your running shoes. Place any accessories you need for the run, like a hat or race belt on top of the shoes.

      Place your helmet on the bike, bottom side up. Place any bike accessories, like sunglasses, in the helmet.

      Put the small hand towel in a convenient spot to reach. You'll have it available if you need to wipe off muddy feet or excess water after the swim.
