How to Get a Sponsorship for a Triathlon
Instructions
-
-
1
Determine what level of sponsorship you're looking for, and whether you're looking for ongoing sponsorship relationships or sponsorships for a single event.
-
2
Join a local triathlon training group or team. Many teams offer sponsorship to members or have connections with sponsorship programs.
-
3
Win or be among the top finishers in your age group in a recognized triathlon. Many sponsorship programs require that you be among the top 10 or 15 percent of finishers. Winning a triathlon or being a top finisher makes it easier to attract sponsors.
-
4
Prepare a sponsorship fact sheet before approaching potential sponsors. Include what levels of sponsorship you're offering, and what the sponsor will get in return, such as logo placement on your helmet or jersey or recognition on your training blog. Also include pertinent information about the number of viewers anticipated at your triathlon and site statistics for your training blog or website.
-
5
Approach local businesses to ask for sponsorship. Contact local sporting goods stores and health- or fitness-oriented businesses, as well as your personal bank, grocery store and other businesses with which you have a relationship. Local businesses will be more likely to sponsor you if the event is also local.
-
6
Solicit sponsorship from your family and friends. Each friend may only be able to contribute a small amount, but a large group of friends can chip in enough to cover your race entry fee or the cost of your next wetsuit.
-
7
Sign up with an online sponsorship directory. Publicize your sponsorship link on your training blog or through social media and apply to relevant sponsorship opportunities through the directory.
