Take the boots outside and knock them against a tree or step to loosen and remove the dirt and sediment that's likely stuck in the ridges of the soles.

    • 2

Scrub any remaining dirt out of the soles with a toothbrush or other fine cleaning brush. Then wipe the soles clean with a damp rag or paper towel.

    • 3

Wipe smooth leather or rubber boots clean with a moist cloth. Wipe away loose dirt. For suede, wipe away any loose dirt or residue with a soft, dry cloth.

    • 4

To remove salt stains, "Good Housekeeping" recommends using a solution of 1 part white vinegar and 1 part water. Dab the boots clean with a soft cloth dampened in the solution. Then clean with a cloth moistened with water and dry off with a soft, dry cloth. You could also purchase a cleaning solution designed to remove salt.

Use a leather boot cleaning solution to clean tough stains. Make sure the cleaning solution is designed for the specific kind of leather you are cleaning. Follow the instructions for your specific cleaner.

Use an eraser. An eraser can be effective at removing dirt and stains on suede boots. Use a standalone eraser and gently rub the soiled area. Don't use water to clean suede–water will damage the look and feel of suede.

Let the boots dry. Store them inside away from sunlight and heating elements.
