Poster Competition
-
Turn spirit posters into spirit events by hosting a spirit poster competition. Invite teams of three to four students down to the gym or cafeteria during a free period or after school. To make the challenge a team building effort, pair two cheerleaders or student atheletes with two student from the general student body. Supply each team with an assortment of useful and creative supplies including poster board, markers, tape, ribbon, buttons and magazines. Set a timer for twenty minutes and instruct each team to create a festive, eye-catching poster to hang in the hallway; posters could support a team, advertise an event or promote school unity. During the drawing portion, present encouraging cheers to root for each team. At the end of the time limit, present posters to a group of teachers and declare a winner by applause. Award the winner team a set of school t-shirts or hats. Hang all the posters in the hallways or cafeteria.
Butcher Block Poster Walls
-
Turn an entire wall into a spirit poster using rolls of butcher block paper. Roll out a large section of paper onto a clear wall in a hallway, classroom or gym. Draw the basic outline of a drawing of several cheerleaders rooting for a sports team. Color just enough of the poster so that the image is clear, but leave significant portions blank. Across the top of the poster, write, "Show Your Spirit!" Tape several plastic cups with markers, pencils and crayons near the poster. Invite students to leave encouraging messages or fill in parts of the drawing as they pass the poster. Leave the poster up for the week prior to an event; present the poster at the beginning of the event and incorporate it into cheers or hoist it into the air when the home team scores or makes an important play.
Student Profiles
-
Encourage friendships and school spirit by creating poster profiles of members of the cheerleading squad. Take photos of each member of the cheer team and distribute them to other members of the team. Each member is responsible for incorporating the photo into a school spirit poster that both supports school unity and relays information about the poster's cover girl or boy. Use bright poster board, glitter and colorful embellishments, as well as little-known or interesting facts about the person to make the posters interesting.
