Ideas for Cheerleading Signs

Cheerleaders are responsible for team spirit and morale and can achieve high team spirit a number of ways. Cheerleaders can pump up a crowd or encourage sports players with cleverly phrased posters. Posters can also prompt a crowd during a cheer or even support a particular player.

  1. General Posters

    • A poster can be a great way to announce a game, recognize players or encourage school spirit. A typical poster can have your school's slogan or mascot, or a motivational saying such as: Let's Go, Go Team Go, Rock the Field, Score. Signs specific to defense and offense are also popular. A common defense sign is a posterboard cutout or painting of the letter "D" and a portion of white picket fence; when held side by side, they represent defense.

      You can also make posters specific to your team's mascot. For example, if your team is a stinging insect, you could have your posters say "Sting those Wolverines!" If, on the other hand, your opponent's mascot is an insect, your poster could say "Exterminate those Hornets!"

    Cheer Posters

    • When leading a crowd in a cheer, it can be helpful to have signs with each word of the cheer or chant. Paint a poster with each word of the cheer in large letters so that everyone in the crowd can see the words. When leading the chant, individual cheerleaders should hold up the corresponding words.

    Player Posters

    • For a big game, making personalized player posters can be a great way to encourage individual players. Put each cheerleader in charge of decorating the hallways or lockers with a player's posters. The posters can have a theme based on the opponent or use general motivational posters.

    Candy Posters

    • Candy posters can work motivational wonders. Some candy poster combinations include: "You're Worth a Grand" paired with a $100 Grand candy bar; "Give It Extra Effort" paired with Extra gum; "You're Red Hot" paired with Red Hot candy; "Send 'em to Mars" paired with a Mars bar; or "Burst Their Bubble" paired with bubble gum.
