1
Check with your team to make sure you're allowed to customize and create your own helmet. Some leagues have rules that specify all players must have the same helmet and uniform.
-
2
Remove everything from the shell of the helmet by using a screwdriver. This includes the face mask, buttons or snaps, and both the pads and liner.
-
3
Clean the helmet shell using a noncorrosive detergent. You do this to make sure there isn't anything left on the shell that will prevent the paint from applying properly.
-
4
Place masking tape over all areas that you do not want to paint. If there is a logo that you're trying to leave untouched, make sure to cover it.
-
5
Spray primer on the helmet and the face mask. Make sure you do this in a well-ventilated area, as the fumes from most primers are poisonous.
-
6
Wait a few days for the primer to fully dry, then spray paint your helmet and face mask.
-
7
Use stencils to paint any additional designs onto your helmet. The rule when stenciling is to paint from background to foreground. For instance, if you had the letters "AB" set over top of a blue circle, you would paint the blue circle first, let it dry, then paint the "AB."
-
8
Restore all padding and screws to the helmet. Make sure you test the helmet before putting it into action.
