College Football Spirit Ideas

For loyal alumni, students and hometown boosters, there is nothing as exciting as the college football season. Whether your team is headed to a bowl game or the bottom of the rankings, prove you are an all-weather fan by showing your team spirit. There are many ways, small and big, to demonstrate your college football spirit and improve spirit among other fans, on-campus or off.
  1. Spirit At Games

    • Attend a college football game. It's one of the easiest ways to show your team spirit. Dress in your school colors and paint your face with your school's logo, mascot or team colors. Male students can go all out by sitting in a row together and painting their chests, shoulders, backs and arms in the school colors with the letters of the school's name or star quarterback on their chests. Audition for the school cheerleading squad, spirit team or yell leader group to show extra spirit. Many schools have auxiliary groups with special seating, T-shirts or other privileges for students with extra spirit.

    Spirit Year-Round

    • Just because it's not game day or even football season does not mean you can't exercise your school spirit. Wear your school's shirts all week long during football season and on special occasions the rest of the year. Get a "My University Football" bumper sticker for your car. Cut out a plywood football shape, paint it with your school colors and plant it on a stick in your front yard to let your whole neighborhood know where your loyalties lie.

    Spirit Off-Campus

    • College students studying abroad or alumni who have moved far from campus may find themselves missing the easy and infectious campus spirit during football season. Throw a football-viewing party for fellow students or for area alumni to meet other fans or show your passion for your team. Join your college's booster association to help fund the football team and get newsletters, emails and other information about the team. If your team makes it to a major bowl game, plan a college reunion around a road trip to go watch them play and cheer them on.

    Spirit for The Littlest Fans

    • It's never too early to teach the next generation of college football fans. Bring your children with you to games or watch the games as a family if you live too far from campus. Order football-themed shirts for your them, and pick out barrettes and hair bows in the school colors for girls. For formal occasions, dress your children in smocked or embroidered outfits in the school colors. Blankets, teddy bears in the college football sweater or small footballs in the school colors make ideal baby gifts for children whose parents still have that school spirit.
