How to Use a Mascot

You can use a mascot for numerous purposes. The one most familiar to many of us is the sports team mascot -- your school, university or favorite sports team may have one for sports events and games, school pep rallies and other events at which school or team spirit is encouraged. Businesses use mascots to establish corporate identity and increase sales. Schools and similar organizations can use mascots to encourage positivity, promote character-building and reinforce positive choices. The military in many countries also use mascots as symbols of national pride and strength.

  1. How to use a mascot in a school environment

    • 1

Develop or use a mascot identified with the town or the town's schools. School mascots are most effective when created in the school's identified colors or costumed to evoke famous local historical figures. Others make effective use of fierce animals or warrior-like figures to promote the concept of victory, strength and fighting spirit.

Use the mascot to entertain at school pep rallies and sporting events to boost school spirit and team pride. Before and during events, use the mascot to build excitement and increase interest and participation in the event.

    • 3

Use the school mascot at student assemblies to encourage students to display positive behavior and desired character traits. An upbeat and popular mascot can inspire students and boost pride in one's school.

Use of corporate or national mascots

    • 4

Use a company mascot to reinforce corporate identity (for example, Mickey Mouse and the Walt Disney Company), build brand loyalty and improve marketing efforts. Create the mascot using colors, characters or themes that invoke the spirit of your brand.

    • 5

Bring your mascot to perform at new location openings and community events to draw in new customers and establish your company as part of the community and a good neighbor.

    • 6

Select a mascot that evokes the warrior spirit or a creature of strength to represent your country or your country's military. The United States and its military use the majestic eagle as a mascot or national emblem. Germany and other countries also use the eagle to represent their militaries.

Use popular mascots, either product- or team-specific, to do community outreach or charitable work, such as visiting sick children in the hospital, promoting children's literacy in local libraries and supporting needy children and families through recreational sports or home-building programs in under-served communities.
