How to Make a Mascot Mask
Things You'll Need
- Brown grocery sack
- Masking tape
- 3 newspapers
- 2 cups unbleached flour
- 2 tsp. salt
- 4 cups lukewarm water
- Package of colored tissue paper
- Acrylic paints
- Scissors
- Glue
Instructions

1
Flatten the brown paper bag. Cut off both of the top corners, leaving the middle space as wide as the head that will be wearing the mask.
-
2
Open the bag and set upside down. Collapse the sides to create a rounded shape and tape into place. There should be no holes in the bag once all the sides are rounded together. Try the mask on to measure where the eye holes should be, and then cut these out.
-
3
Make the papier-mache mix. Begin by tearing newspaper into 1/4-inch strips.
-
4
Mix the flour and salt and gradually add the water to create a paste that is free of lumps.
-
5
Dip the newspaper strips into the paste and apply to the bag, being careful not to cover the eye holes.
-
6
When the bag is covered, let it dry overnight.
-
7
Check that the papier-mache has hardened. If so, it can be decorated. This can be done by using either paint or tissue paper. If using paint, simply paint the mask into any animal needed. If using tissue paper, cut the paper into strips that can be glued onto the mask to create a textured look.
-
8
Use different colors of paint or tissue paper to create features such as a nose, mouth, ears, stripes or any other element of the mascot necessary.
-
9
Let dry completely before wearing.
