How to Make Terrain Park Jumps

The terrain park is a specially designed training facility for snowboarders and freestyle skiers with an intermediate to advanced level of skill. The majority of jumps featured in the terrain park are constructed entirely of snow. In the early days of the sport, snowboarders would have to construct ramps on an unpredictable backwoods slope. As of 2011, most snowboarding mountain resorts are equipped with a terrain park. According to Windell's snowboard camp, ramp builders shape the jumps from large mounds of powdered snow.

Instructions

    • 1

Carry your ramp-building gear to a low-traffic area of the park. Place the plastic sleds onto the ground to begin the building process. Utilize the snow shovel to fill the interior of the sleds with powdered snow.

    • 2

Drag the sleds to the designated jump-building site. Dump the sleds adjacent to one another to create a a large mound of snow. Repeat the process until you have enough snow to create a three- to four-foot kicker ramp.

    • 3

Shape the mound with the flathead shovel to carve out an inclined ramp. Compact the face of the snow ramp with the head of the snow shovel. Throw some extra course salt over the face of the ramp to prevent ice from forming.

    • 4

Ride up the ramp at a minimal speed to test the angle and stability. Make any necessary shaping adjustments with the flathead shovel. Apply a fresh layer of snow to the ramp face every few hours.
