How Far Can Snowboard Boots Overhang?

When the heels and toes of your snowboard boots extend over the edge of your snowboard, it's called overhang. Too much overhang causes drag in the snow, affecting how you turn. When your snowboarding boot heels and toes are too far from the snowboard's edge, you'll have less control over the board because you'll lack leverage. For the best snowboarding experience, learn how to determine how much overhang, if any, is beneficial before you purchase a snowboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your snowboard boots to the sporting goods store. Put them on to test out possible snowboards to buy.

    • 2

Choose a snowboard with the brand and style you like, and place it on the floor.

    • 3

Step onto the snowboard and put your feet in your snowboard stance. This can be regular, or right foot forward, or goofy, with the left foot forward. Put your feet in the proper stance angle, or the angle the bindings will be from the front of the snowboard.

    • 4

Evaluate how the snowboard width matches your snowboard boot width. Look at the toe and heel of each boot to ensure the edges are as close to the snowboard's edges as possible without overhang.

    • 5

Try out several snowboards until you find one that best fits the width of your snowboard boots. Get a snowboard that doesn't let your snowboard boots overhang, or only overhang by up to three centimeters.

    • 6

Finalize your decision to purchase a snowboard based on your ability. A novice snowboarder can get away with a little overhang because you won't be making deep turns. An experienced snowboarder should have no overhang with snowboard boots.
