How to Make a Wheelie Bar

A wheelie bar is a great accessory to add to your bike because it allows you to practice doing wheelies until you're comfortable enough to try them without a wheelie bar. It could save a lot of bruises and road rash or even a broken leg. You can make one using a few household items and some steel rods.

Things You'll Need

  • Steel rod
  • Wheels and bearings
  • Wheel mounting hardware

Instructions

    • 1

Locate a 2-foot section of steel about 1/4-inch thick and 2 or 3 inches wide. The steel needs to be strong enough to support the weight of you on your bike.

    • 2

Bend the steel to create two 45-degree angles about 6 inches from the ends. This creates a sort of "c" shape, except the ends of the "c" will not come fully around. Instead, the ends of the bar point at a 45-degree angle.

    • 3

Bend the very ends of the steel at another 45-degree angle so they form two perpendicular sides that can be attached to the steel rod to hold the wheels.

    • 4

Drill holes into the ends of the steel and fit a section of steel rod between them.

    • 5

Slide two skateboard truck bolts or similar hardware to mount the wheels into the steel rod and secure them by welding the hardware to the edge of the steel rod.

    • 6

Mount two small skateboard wheels to the ends of the truck bolts with the proper ball bearings already in the skateboard wheels. Secure them with truck bolts.

    • 7

Mount the bar to your bike so it allows you to perform your particular type of wheelie. Depending on what kind of wheelie you're performing and how your bike is designed, you may want to mount it to the frame or behind the seat on the back wheel forks.
