1
Flip your bike over so that it rests on the seat and handlebars. You must access the rear wheel to install the chain tensioner, as it attaches between the frame of the bike and the bolt that secures the wheel into place.
-
2
Remove the wheel hub bolt from the side where the chain is attached. Typical BMX bikes feature a sprocket and chain combination on the right side of the bike. Loosen this bolt with the adjustable wrench.
-
3
Hold the wheel up to make sure it does not fall out of place. The bolt on the opposite side of the hub should hold this bike section together, but you may need to provide support to ensure a smooth install of the chain tensioner.
-
4
Slide the chain tensioner over the bolt area of the bike, and then hand-screw the original hardware back into place to secure. Move the circular disc on the underside of the chain tensioner so that the chain threads through this piece. When the rear wheel spins as powered by the chain, the tensioner pushes the metal chain upwards to reduce the amount of slack.

5
Tighten the bolt with your adjustable wrench. Make sure that the hub is properly secured, then flip your bike over and test out your new chain tensioner.
