How to Become Good at BMX

BMX, which stands for bicycle motocross, is an extreme sport in which a lightweight bicycle is used to do tricks that include jumps, twists, turns and hops over various obstacles. The bicycle used for BMX riding is lighter than a traditional bike, making it easier to maneuver. If you are interested in learning and mastering BMX, it takes practice, patience and determination.

If this is your first time riding a BMX bike, take it out for a simple ride before attempting any tricks. Get used to the light weight and how it feels. Start with basic maneuvers such as hopping before moving on to more advanced tricks such as flips.

Take risks only when you feel comfortable doing so and always wear protective gear (helmet, gloves, knee and elbow pads, and body armor for advanced riding). As you learn each trick, practice it as many times as necessary until it is perfected. Ride in varied places, such as skate parks, trails and streets. The safest place to practice tricks is a skate park that offers a foam pit, especially when learning flips and other complex tricks. You may also find skate parks that offer training and practice sessions for all ages, such as the Freedom Park Raceway in Camarillo, California.

Ride with friends who are also into BMX riding. This adds a social element and gives you more opportunities to learn, practice and perfect new tricks.

    • 4

Condition your body when you aren't riding your bike. BMX riding requires strong muscles. Lift free weights at home or use machines or weights at your local gym to strengthen your arms, shoulders, back, core and legs.

    • 5

Eat a nutritious meal prior to riding and always stay hydrated. A hydration pack is optional, but may be uncomfortable to wear while doing BMX tricks.
