How to Become Good at Dodgeball

Dodgeball is a challenging team sport that requires aggressiveness, agility and speed. In a dodgeball game, two teams position themselves on opposite sides of a court and try to eliminate each other by throwing dodgeballs. If you are hit with a ball, you must leave the game, but if you catch a ball, the thrower is eliminated instead. Become a good dodgeball player by learning and practicing the skills needed to win the game.

Read and understand the official dodgeball rules created by the National Dodgeball League. The rules include information about how many players are allowed on a team, the boundaries on the court and blocking.

    • 2

Try target practice to improve your aim. Set up dummies on the other side of the court and practice aiming for a specific one. Aim below the knees to decrease the chances of your opponent catching the ball.

    • 3

Learn and practice throwing strategies. With at least two other teammates, approach the attack line and throw the balls at one opponent. Another strategy is to throw a ball at an opponent at the same time he is throwing his ball at one of your teammates. Perform "The Cherry" by throwing one ball high above an opponent and as he looks up to catch it, throw a second ball at him.

Run sprints to improve your speed. Place two cones about 20 yards apart and sprint from one to the other. Sprints will help you run to the attack line to grab balls at the beginning of the game.

    • 5

Use a piece equipment called an agility ladder to increase your feet quickness, thus improving your ability to dodge balls. Lay the ladder on the floor and run laterally, placing the right foot, then left foot in the first square. Then step out of the square with your left foot, then your right foot before continuing to the second square.

Perform a hand-eye coordination drill, which will help you catch dodgeballs during the game. Have a friend stand a few feet in front of you and bounce a tennis ball. Run forward and catch the ball before its second bounce.
