How to Make a Freestyle Motocross Speed Ramp

Freestyle Motocross, also known as FMX, has taken the sport of motocross to its most extreme. FMX riders compete by displaying not only their riding skills, but their skills at performing stunts and jumps as well. The two main events in this sport are freestyle motocross, where riders perform a routine over a course with multiple jumps, and big air, where riders attempt long and complex jumps from a dirt ramp. Constructing a ramp is relatively inexpensive, providing you have some basic tools and are prepared to put in some labor.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the best location for the ramp. Select a site that is clear and free from obstructions and hazards such as rocks and trees.

    • 2

Dump at least ten wheelbarrows full of dirt on to the site. The specific amount of dirt you will need to build your ramp will be determined by how large you want to build your ramp. If you cannot shovel dirt from another area on your site, you can pay to have dirt delivered by a local nursery or home improvement center.

    • 3

Shape the incline of your ramp. Use your flathead shovel to form the grade of incline you are aiming for, and start tamping the dirt down with the tamper until it is smooth and firm. If the dirt is very dry, wet it down to make it easier to shape and smooth.

    • 4

Add more dirt to your incline, and repeat the tamping and smoothing process until you are satisfied with the size of the ramp.

    • 5

Drive up the ramp slowly on your motorcycle to test the firmness of the structure. If the surface gives way easily, you may need to wet and tamp the ramp further.

    • 6

Jump the ramp at medium speed to test the ramp. Once you have thoroughly tested the ramp, you will have a good idea as to any adjustments you need to make by adding or removing dirt.
