DIY Floor Anchor for Rock Climbing

Indoor rock climbing is an effective way to hone your climbing skills in a controlled environment. Top belay ropes are commonly in place to make climbing any route safe and quick. A top belay requires a belayer to pull in the rope slack as the climber ascends the wall. If the climber loses his grip, the rope catches him and the belayer absorbs his downward force. When the climber weighs significantly more than the belayer, it's wise to have floor anchors to secure the belayer.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the location on the floor where you would like to install the floor anchor.

    • 2

Drill a 3-inch-deep hole in this location with a concrete drill bit. The bit must be the diameter specified by the expansion bolt manufacturer.

    • 3

Blow out the dust from the hole with compressed air. Insert the nylon brush into the hole and work it in and out to remove any loose material. Blow the hole again with compressed air.

    • 4

Align the bolt hanger's bolt hole over the hole in the floor. Insert the expansion bolt through the bolt hanger and into the hole in the concrete. Hammer the head of the bolt gently until it is flush with the top of the hanger.

Tighten the bolt on the expansion bolt very tightly with a wrench. This expands a compression mechanism on the end of the bolt, locking it to the floor.
