How to Do a Spin in the Air While Kiteboarding

Kiteboarding is a water sport that utilizes a specialized water board with foot bindings, and a kite that the user holds onto in order to be propelled by the wind. The variability of the kite in the wind means that if the user steers correctly and maintains control of the kite, it is possible to do some fun and extreme tricks beyond what is possible in other similar water sports. Doing a spin in the air while kiteboarding is a basic to intermediate trick that you should master before expanding into more tricks.

Instructions

    • 1

Mount your kiteboard and enter the water. Ensure that you have enough wind to sufficiently pick up the kite and that you can control your kite well.

    • 2

Approach a wave at a reasonable speed and move your kite up at an angle just before hitting the lip of the wave. For example, jump as you normally would in wave conditions and allow the momentum of the wave to propel you upward.

    • 3

Place your holding pressure on your front hand while in the air. Start and maintain the spin by looking in the direction you want to spin. The rest of your body will follow your head. Spin as little as one time or more than three times, depending upon your skill and the jump height you have obtained.

    • 4

Look in the direction opposite of your spin in order to stop the spinning motion. Be prepared to land once you do this as you will not have much time between ceasing to spin and hitting the water.

    • 5

Land your spin as you would land a basic jump. Look down where you want to land, place your body and board into vertical alignment downwind, and turn your kite as needed for steering. Extend your legs while in the vertical position but bend at the knees to brace for impact to prevent injury.
