ATV and 4x4 Trails Near Indianapolis

Whether you prefer mountains, woods or another type of outdoor terrain, the area around Indianapolis, Indiana, is full of acres and acres of public and private land with trails for ATVs and 4x4s. Once you get a permit through Indiana's OHV (off-highway vehicle registration) for your vehicle, you can use these trails whenever the mood strikes. These trails differ in variety, difficulty, length, price and ease-of-access.

  1. Haspin Acres

    • Located an hour and a half east of Indianapolis, Haspin Acres spans 750 acres of trails. This location offers camping 365 days a year and riding from dawn to dusk. With motocross tracks and dirt-drag racing, Haspin Acres stays busy.

      The cost is $16 per person per day. There are restroom and shower facilities on site. The rules are pretty standard: Helmets are required; no riding during closed trail hours; and riders must remain on the the tracks. There is also a list of other safety precautions to take into consideration.

    Badlands Off-Road Park

    • Badlands Off-Road Park, about an hour and a half northwest of Indianapolis, spans 800 acres and includes sand dunes, gravel hills, mud pits, wood trails, rock-crawling, water sources and other terrain to tackle with an off-road vehicle. As the Badlands website states, "We provide some of the best trails, from mild to wild, for ATVs, dirt bikes, side-by-sides, 4x4 SUVs, etc."

      Prices per person are $20 per day for tracks or trails. There are two hotels and three campsites from which to choose and ATV or 4x4 rentals at the park itself. These can cost up to $350 per day.

    Redbird State Recreation Area

    • Redbird State Recreation Area can be found two hours southwest of Indianapolis. Redbird is home to more than 1,400 acres of off-road trails and is the first state-owned and -maintained off-road riding area. This area is constantly developing and currently offers numerous trails of varying difficulty levels. There are four local hotels nearby and three parks for camping or lodging that are open almost year-round. During the spring, summer and fall, this area is open from Thursday through Sunday, between 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. During the winter, the park is only open on Saturday and Sunday. The current daily charge is $10 per vehicle.
