1
Try skateboarding if you haven't already done so. While being a skateboarder necessarily isn't required to writing about it, you'll have a better understanding of the sport ---- which will show through in your words ---- if you've tried it first.
-
2
Buy skateboarding books to develop a knowledge of the sport's tricks. Not being able to properly describe a trick will erode your credibility. It's important to know the common tricks such as the ollie, nose grind and kick flip, but also tricks that are more advanced.
-
3
Learn about the various top pro skateboarders, such as Tony Hawk, who have revolutionized the sport with their skating. In your writing, you'll be able to reference the skills of certain skaters when describing the performance of other skaters, which will show your audience that you understand the sport's biggest stars.
-
4
Read the guidelines that pertain to your assignment. If writing a school essay, make sure to understand the particular format that the teacher has in place. If you plan to submit a piece of writing to a skateboarding website, for example, read the website to understand the style and format of the website's articles.
-
5
Write your article or essay to ensure it adheres to your specific topic and the relevant guidelines. For example, if you're writing an essay about why you love skateboarding, write about how you began the sport, which tricks were hardest to execute and which pro skateboarders you admire. If you've been approved to cover a certain regional event for a skateboarding website, describe the venue, the winners of the event, the tricks they performed and their scores. If possible, interview the winning riders.
