How to Pop Your Board When Doing a Trick

Skateboarding tricks come in a variety of styles. However, a common requirement in most tricks is the ability to pop the board up off the ground. Whether you are getting airborne to perform a jumping trick or simply elevating your board to get it onto a raised rail or ledge to perform a grind, the foundation of a skater's arsenal is the basic Ollie. Once you have mastered using your Ollie to pop the board into the air, you can begin to add flourishes to it for flipping tricks, or practice performing an Ollie at a surface you can grind.

Instructions

    • 1

Ride forward at a comfortable speed. While it is important to learn to Ollie while moving, you don't need to be at top speed when learning.

    • 2

Position your feet on the board with your rear foot near the tail end, and your lead foot just in front of center.

    • 3

Squat down, lowering your center of gravity and creating the potential to explode up to generate upward momentum.

    • 4

Press down with your rear foot, causing the tail to lower and the nose of the board to begin rising off the ground.

    • 5

Slide your front foot forward along the top of the board as the nose is elevated off the ground and apply some downward pressure on the nose.

    • 6

Lift your rear leg up into the air to allow the downward pressure on the nose to raise the tail of the board off the ground.
