How to Do a Basic Pop-Shuvit

The "pop-shuvit," an extension of the regular "shuvit," is a popular skateboarding trick involving an "ollie" to lift the skateboard into the air, immediately followed by a 180-degree spin of the board before safely landing back on it. This trick should not be confused with a regular "shuvit" -- an easier trick where the board is not required to lift from the floor before rotating. Master the "ollie" and regular "shuvit" before attempting this trick. Beginners are likely to experience some shin bruising!

Instructions

    • 1

Place your rear foot on the rear "pop," or raised edge at the back of the board. Place your front foot between the center of the board and the front trucks. The exact positioning of your front foot is purely individual -- experiment with different positions until you find out what's easiest for you.

    • 2

Bend slightly at the knees. Begin extending your legs and shift your weight onto your back foot to press the rear of the board down hard -- known as "popping." Jump into the air, allowing the board to lift up underneath you.

    • 3

Kick your rear foot forwards to spin the board "frontside," or flick it towards you to spin it in a "backside" direction.

    • 4

Watch the board beneath you and catch it with your feet by pushing down once it has revolved the full 180-degrees. Absorb the shock by bending your knees as you land.

Practice this trick at speed, over objects or down stairs as you progress.
