How to Customize Your Griptape

There are many different types of skateboard available, and customizing your grip tape is one way to ensure your board stands out from the rest. Grip tape is the adhesive backed, gritty covering that lies on the top of the skateboard. Similar to sandpaper, it helps your shoes grip to your skateboard. Because the grip tape sits on the top of your skateboard, this is a very noticeable way to make your skateboard look different from the standard designs.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the design onto paper. Make this into a template by using a knife to carefully cut the design out of the paper.

    • 2

Place your template face down on the back of your grip tape, so that you see a mirror image of your design. Draw your design onto the paper backing of the tape with a pencil.

    • 3

Place your grip tape on the cutting mat. Carefully cut the design out of the grip tape with a sharp craft knife.

    • 4

Remove the backing paper, and carefully place the grip tape on the skateboard. Leave a slight overhang. Press down firmly on the tape, removing all air bubbles.

    • 5

Trim off the excess grip tape that overhangs your board with the knife. The grip tape should sit flush with the edge of the board.
