Oftentimes when professional skateboarders have interviews in skateboard magazines, the first page will feature a portrait of them. The portrait portrays the skateboarder not in action and usually consists of a simple face or full-body picture. The perspective of the portrait can make or break the success of the photograph. Finding a unique perspective such as a high- or low-angled shot can make the photograph stand out. Closeup shots of the face and eyes can create an interesting portrait as well. Stand on top of a high ledge or platform and photograph the skateboarder looking up at the camera. Use a wide-angle lens and shoot the skater from an upward angle to make the subject look like a giant.

The sequence shot in skateboarding photography remains an important aspect in magazines. The sequence photo requires a direct perspective on the subject, or the skater, so the completion of the tricks can be clearly documented. Interesting angles can also help to make the sequence unique, but make sure the trick has been clearly photographed. Instead of focusing the majority of the attention on the skater himself, focus the lens on the skateboard as well. The main action of the trick actually takes place with the board, so never lose sight of it during the completion of the sequence.

Black-and-white photos still make it into skateboard magazines because of the different look they possess as opposed to conventional color photographs. With a simple push of a button, the digital camera can change from a regular color photo to a black-and-white photo. Purchase black-and-white film for use in old school cameras that require the development of film. When shooting at night, incorporate the use of an in-camera flash, or an off-camera flash that attaches to the camera and produces a brighter flash.
