How to Install Non-Release Ski Bindings

Non-release ski bindings are bindings that do not release your feet when you fall or become unbalanced. Typical bindings may release prematurely, causing you to fall easier. According to Robert Johnson, Carl Ettlinger and Jasper Shealy, non-release ski bindings make the skier more susceptible to lower leg injuries. In their study on skiboard injuries, the authors found that skiboarders, who use primarily non-release bindings, had more injuries to their ankles and tibias. Non-release bindings are used on ski blades, which are half the length of traditional skis, snowboards, cross-country skis and skiboards.

Instructions

    • 1

Test the range of the binding; it must properly fit the skier. Test the ski boot in the binding for proper fit and test the boot, binding and friction plate for wear. Test the functioning of the brake arms. Look over the screws and bindings for damage and check abrasion, cracks or other damage to the skis. Replace any damaged parts.

    • 2

Clean the ski with a damp cloth or air compressor and remove any dirt, debris or mud from both the ski and binding. Pay particular attention to the areas where the binding and ski will be attached. Avoid silicone or solvents during cleaning.

    • 3

Open the installation tool so that it is the length of the boot you will use with the ski. Set the boot into the tool and lock the tool into place. The boot should be secure and not jiggle or move when you try to move it.

    • 4

Secure your skis so they will not move while you are working with them. Use a vice grip or clamp if you have one available, but do not make it too tight so that it damages the skis.

    • 5

Check the ski manufacturer’s instructions for the position of the binding and place the tool in the exact position stated on the instructions. Look at the ski for the indicator of the middle of the sole.

    • 6

Identify the bit size and hole depth on the manufacturer’s instructions and drill the holes indicated on the installation tool.

    • 7

Clean the ski again. Remove excess wood or shavings from the ski and holes.

    • 8

Attach the toe piece to the anti-friction plate and position it over the four toe holes. Screw the plate and toe piece into the ski using the four screws that came with your bindings.

    • 9

Position the heel piece over the plate and align the screws over the holes you drilled for the heel piece. Screw the four screws in with a screwdriver.

    • 10

Assemble the break into the heel-piece housing. Tighten the screws down after moving the break backward. Test the break to make sure it moves easily. Do not push the break before it is installed.
