Instructions for Step Aerobics

Step aerobics exercise is an excellent way to build muscle and cardiovascular endurance. It is also a wonderful way to burn calories and lose weight. It doesn't require a large investment in equipment because the entire workout is based on climbing up and down a single step. This makes it the ideal activity for the busy, at-home exerciser.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a step from a sporting goods store. These are special, generally-plastic pieces of equipment, that can be adjusted as your fitness level increases.

    • 2

Wear shoes that minimize stress on your joints and adequately support your frame.

    • 3

Lift your leg and step onto the step. Ensure it never goes to more than a 90 degree angle. Step off the step, and repeat.

    • 4

Vary your stepping style. Step with your feet close together sometimes and far apart at other times. Lead with your right leg sometimes and your left leg at other times.

    • 5

Vary the rate at which you work. Step extremely quickly sometimes, and slower at other times. You want to keep your body from becoming too accustomed to any set of movements or rate of movement.

    • 6

Maintain a high average level of intensity. Since there is no resistance in these exercises, it is up to you to keep your heart rate at a high level. Some of the workout should have your heart rate at its maximum to stimulate the best cardiovascular strength.
