How to Make Your Own Dip Handles

Dips are a simple exercise that work your triceps, chest and shoulders. Dips are done on dip handles, which is essentially two parallel bars that you hold while you raise and lower your body weight. There is no need to purchase commercially manufactured handles, however. You can make your own using 1-inch-diameter pipes and joints from your local hardware store. These simple handles will cost a fraction of store-bought ones, and can be broken down for transport as needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Screw two threaded T-joints onto a 2-foot, double-threaded pipe. Screw a 6-inch pipe into the opposite end of each T-joint, creating a long pipe with two flanges facing up. This is one of the bases.

    • 2

Repeat this process to create another base.

    • 3

Screw a 3-foot double-threaded pipe into each upward flange in the T-joints.

    • 4

Screw elbow joints onto the tops of the 3-foot pipes. The elbows should face in the same direction, perpendicular to the 2-foot pipes.

    • 5

Connect these final elbow joints with two more 2-foot double-threaded pipes. This creates two upside-down "U" shapes with feet that will allow you to do dip exercises.

    • 6

Wrap the handles with dish towels, held in place with duct tape, if you prefer a cushioned grip.
