How to Compare Punching Bags

Using a punching bag might be a form of exercise that you have not considered. You don't have to be an expert in boxing or training for a fight to utilize a punching bag for exercise. Many gyms and fitness centers now have punching bags as regular fitness equipment. Once you try one, you might want to buy a punching bag for your home. This will likely take a bit of comparison shopping to find the one that's right for you.

Research the difference between hanging bags and standing bags. Hanging bags must be anchored to the ceiling and are a poor choice if you are renting a house or apartment. Standing bags have weight distribution that allows them to stand on their own.

    • 2

Get the correct weight for your punching bag. You can determine the right weight by trying a few. Punch the bag. It should move a little when you punch it but it should still offer some resistance. For example, a man of average height, about 5 feet 8 inches who weighs about 170 pounds, is likely to need a 60- to 70-pound punching bag.

Find a water-core punching bag if you want to be able to adjust the weight if two people are using it. Adjust the weight by emptying or adding water.

    • 4

Look for vinyl punching bags for an affordable option over leather. Leather is more durable and longer-lasting, however.

Pay attention to weather resistance if you plan to use the punching bag in an outside area, such as your garage. These will be labeled as indoor/outdoor punching bags.
