Punching Bag Installation

Installing a punching bag into your home gym is a great way to add variety to your workouts. Using your punch bag will provide a great cardiovascular workout, while conditioning your shoulders, arms, chest, abdominals and core. By nature, punching bags are heavy and need to be installed correctly to prevent damage to furnishings and walls. Always follow the instruction manual included with your installation kit.

      Locate an area to hang your punching bag free from all furnishings and obstacles. Take into consideration that you will be circling the punching bag during exercise and that it will swing back and fourth when hit. The ceiling from which the bag is to be mounted will need to be high enough to hang the bag at the required height.

      Move you stud finder across the ceiling in the desired location. Once the light turns red, you have located a support beam ---- needed to support the weight of your punching bag. Continue moving your stud finder to map out the positioning of the beam and mark a spot with your pencil at half of its width.

      Compare the size of your eyebolt shaft with your drill bit. Choose a drill bit with a slightly smaller diameter than the eyebolt shaft. Drill a hole slightly shallower than the length of the eyebolt shaft at your marked location.

      Screw the eyebolt into the pre-drilled hole in the ceiling beam by hand until tight. Place a screwdriver through the eyebolt and continue tightening until the entire shaft is securely fastened inside the beam.

      Attach one end of an "S" hook to a swivel link, which should be provided with your punching bag installation kit, and the other end to the eyebolt in the ceiling.

      Attach one end of the other "S" hook to the opposite side of the swivel link.

      Lift the bag ---- you might need some assistance ---- and attach the hanging chains to the lower "S" hook.
