How to Run With the Nike SportBand

The Nike+ SportBand is a wristwatch-style gadget that works with a Nike+ shoe sensor to track essential running information, including time and distance of the run, your pace in miles or kilometers, and the number of calories you burned during the run. When you have completed your run, you can plug the SportBand sensor into your computer to record your run statistics at nikeplus.com. Tracking run stats over time provides valuable feedback about your performance and can help you get the most from your training.

Instructions

  1. Set Up

    • 1

Download the Nike+ Utility software at www.nikeplus.com/downloads.

    • 2

Load the utility software by following the directions on the installer wizard.

    • 3

Charge your Nike+ SportBand sensor by plugging it into your computer's USB port. You should let it charge for about two hours the first time.

    • 4

Customize your SportBand sensor. The Nike+ Utility program opens automatically each time you plug in the sensor. Enter your weight and distance preference -- miles or kilometers -- on the User tab.

    Go For a Run

    • 5

Remove the SportBand sensor from your computer and plug it in to your wristband.

    • 6

Place the Nike+ shoe sensor in your left shoe, if you haven't already.

    • 7

Press and hold the large "Record" button -- located to the right of the SportBand display -- for three seconds to turn it on. The display shows a flashing shoe icon as it's locating the signal from your shoe sensor.

    • 8

When the display switches to "Walk," walk around a bit to make sure the SportBand and shoe sensor are communicating.

    • 9

Press the "Record" button again, briefly, to begin recording your run. A bar appears at the bottom of the display to show that it is recording.

    During Your Run

    • 10

Check your statistics throughout your run by pressing the toggle button under the display screen to switch between distance, pace, time and calories burned.

    • 11

Pause your run at any time by pressing the "Record" button. The display numbers flash to show you are paused. Press the button again to resume running.

    • 12

End your run by pressing the "Record" button and holding it for three seconds. The display will say "End" to show it is complete.

    After Your Run

    • 13

Plug your SportBand sensor into your computer to upload your run data to nikeplus.com. The Nike+ Utility program opens and tells you when the upload is complete. You can record up to 28 hours worth of runs before you have to upload.

    • 14

View your accumulated run information on nikeplus.com by clicking the "Visit NikePlus.com" button in the Utility software.

    • 15

Put your Nike+ shoe sensor to sleep to preserve battery life. Take the sensor out of your shoe, and use a pen or unfolded paperclip to press the tiny button on the back. Repeat the process to wake it up again.
