How to Walk Over the Williamsburg Bridge

The Williamsburg bridge connects Brooklyn and Manhattan over the East River. It was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it opened in 1903, designed to carry trains, vehicles and pedestrians. The bridge itself is 1.3 miles long, but many organized walking groups extend this walk to more than two miles by starting and ending some distance from the bridge. While anyone can walk across the bridge, make sure you are in the proper shape to walk more than a mile.

Instructions

    • 1

Dress appropriately. The bridge crosses the East River, and the air can be significantly cooler on the bridge than on either side. Sneakers are recommended. Bring water to stay hydrated.

    • 2

Select your start and end points. Restaurants and bars are in the vicinity to celebrate completing the walk with a snack or a drink.

    • 3

Walk along the pedestrian path at a comfortable pace. The bridge is more than a mile long, so pacing is key to enjoying the experience without becoming short of breath.

    • 4

Enjoy the view. The Manhattan skyline, the immigrant neighborhoods on either end of the bridge and various other bridges are visible at different points on the path. At the bridge's midpoint, you can cross to the other side to change the view.
