The Best Way to Tie a Shoelace

Tying your shoes is a trick that most people learn at a very young age. However, not all shoelace tying methods -- and there are numerous -- are created equal. The trick to a great tied shoe is that the finished product looks even and balanced. The loops should be pointing at either side of the shoe, not the tongue and the toe. Tying shoes properly is especially important for runners who do not wish to trip on laces that have come undone.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold both shoelaces up, one in each hand. Cross the left shoelace over the right, taking the left shoelace in the right hand and the right shoelace in the left hand. The spot where the shoelaces touch should resemble an "X".

    • 2

Hold the "X" between the thumb and index finger of your left hand, while tucking the shoelace in your right hand under the "X". Pull taut.

    • 3

Grasp the lace on the right side of the shoe and create a loop with three-quarters of the lace. Repeat with the left lace. Hold the left loop in your left hand and the right loop in your right hand.

    • 4

Cross the left lace over the right lace, creating an "X" once again.

    • 5

Tuck the top loop over and under the "X" and pull both loops in opposite directions (away from the shoe). This will create an even and balanced tie.
