How to Perform a Lunge Punch in Karate

A lunge punch quickly closes the distance between you and an attacker. If the attacker is taller and has a longer reach, the lunge punch will enable you to use in-close fighting techniques and eliminate your attacker's advantage.

Instructions

      Face forward with your feet about shoulders' width apart. Step forward on one leg with your knee bent. Your back leg will be straight (front stance).

      Drive your rear foot forward strongly. The same-side hand is held as an upturned fist at the side.

      Punch forward with the same-side hand as your rear foot lands forward.

    • 4

      Pull your other hand back into an upturned fist at the side at the same time. This will add power to the punch.

      Retract your punch immediately to strike or defend in a guarded fighting position.
